This page was created out of frustration from lack of good wreck diving information readily available on the Internet for the San Diego area.

This data can be confusing because MANY OF THESE WRECKS ARE DUPLICATES! That's because the data is taken from several sources, mostly NOAA and the California State Land Commission. The California State Land Commission generally misquotes most wreck positions hoping to protect them. Many of these wrecks have never been located. Considerable homework must be done to clear up the discrepancies. Some duplicates will be obvious since they have similar descriptions and are very close to each other.

Some of the positions for wrecks in the early 1900's and late 1800's are gross estimations. These positions were usually reported by survivors who mostly swam ashore. This is especially true for the wrecks around Point Loma.

Reliable positions are Green and unreliable positions are red.

This page can be used as a starting point. Good luck in finding a wreck. Please let me know if you find something and are able to confirm a location. And, if you've already been to one of these wrecks, please let me know so we can share the information. Even if an exact position is determined, it may take additional research to positively identify the site. My e-mail address is john.willis@navsoc.navy.mil.
