Mission San Luis Rey de Francia

Mission San Luis Rey is remarkable for its beauty and unusual location. It is situated near Oceanside and in the chain of the missions is located between San Diego and San Juan Capistrano. The mission was founded in 1797 and is the last of the missions founded by Fr. Fermín Lasuén. San Luis Rey was prosperous from the time of its founding and was well received by Indian. It is named after Louis IX, King of France (1215-1270) famous for his crusades to Egypt and Palestine. The mission complex covers a big area: the main building, retreat houses, lavanderia, spacious patio and huge garden that is also a cemetery. You can see crosses scattered there and statures of the saints. Aslo in the garden there is a crypt of Franciscan friars guarded by stature of Junípero Serra.
