SLIDE SCANNING TIPS from Bob Brace

If you scan the slides or have them scanned, the final image should be 1600 x 1200 pixels and it can be in TIFF, JPG (highest resolution, lowest compression), or PSD formats.

Note that there are 2 basic types of scanners: one allows specification of images size in pixels (1600x1200) and the other requires you to specify either dpi (dots/inch) for the scan or dpi for output.

For those requiring dpi, scan at a high resolution and then resize the image in a photo editing program such as Photoshop to 1600 x 1200 pixels. This can be accomplished by selecting 'Image' and then 'Image Size' or the equivalent. You should have an uncompressed file size of 5.6 MBytes (1600x1200x3 bytes) if all goes right.

Also note that slides have an aspect ratio of 3:2 whereas 1600x1200 pixels is an aspect ratio of 4:3 so you will have to crop your image. You can do this either in the scanning program or in programs such as Photoshop after the scan.
